Women's Basketball Erases Deficit, Nearly Defeats Eagles

Leavenworth, Kansas – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team fell in overtime in a heartbreaking loss to Avila University 73-69 in overtime Saturday afternoon inside Ryan Sports Center on their first Kid's Day, after fighting their way back from a 22-point deficit.

The Spires are now 7-18 overall and 5-16 KCAC.

The Spires got down early as they struggled responding to the Eagles hot shooting, as they shot over 60.0 percent from the field and led 26-7 at the end of the first quarter. In an attempt to close the gap on the scoreboard, Kenzie Beeler penetrated and found Dakota Corle multiple times to score. At the half, Saint Mary trailed 40-25. With an overall great team effort, the Spires fought their way back and took the lead 58-57 after a three-point basket made by Rachel Newquist. With under a minute to play in the fourth quarter, Paige Scheckel went to free-throw line to tie the game up 61-61. Saint Mary had a chance at the end, but Sienna Brown's shot would not fall, sending the game to overtime. The Spires were outscored 12-8 in overtime and lost a tough one.

Four players scored in double-digits for Saint Mary, Scheckel led the team with 17, Schamberger, Brown and Corle each scored 12 points. As a team, Saint Mary shot 45.5 percent from the field. The Spires forced the Eagles to 19 turnovers in the game.

Saint Mary will remain at the Ryan Sports Center on Monday when they host McPherson College at 5 p.m.
