Excelsior Springs, MO. – The University of Saint Mary softball team was eager to take the field after multiple cancellations due to weather, but dropped two games to Missouri Valley College Monday afternoon. The double-header was originally scheduled for Tuesday at the University of Saint Mary and was moved to a neutral site due to inclement weather.
The Spires are now 1-11 overall.
The Vikings scored six runs in the first inning after a mix of hits and a few errors. The Spires cut into the deficit after a sacrifice fly ball to left field by Paige Siewert scored Ashley Whaley. In the bottom of the fifth inning, on a 1-1 count, Samantha Torres jacked one over the left field fence to make the score 8-2.
Saint Mary had bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth but the MVC defense was able to escape after a double-play ended the inning. MVC would hold on in the seventh to secure the win. The final score was 9-2.
The Viking's Kaila DeWitt was the winner on the mound. Halie Morris took the loss for the Spires.
Torres went 2-for-4 at the plate and had a homerun.
In game two, the Spires got down early after a three-run homerun. Saint Mary responded with two runs of their own after a shallow hit down the left field line by Camille Reyes scored Lindsey Fishman and Hazel Faz.
The defense for both teams held each other scoreless the rest of the way and the Spires fell short in game two with a 3-2 final score.
Shelby Mohler took the win on the mound for MVC. Alyssa Cervantes took the loss for Saint Mary.
Reyes went 1-2 from the plate and had two RBI's for the Spires.

Saint Mary will travel to Atchison, Kan. this Wednesday, where they will take on Benedictine in another non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set to start 2:00 pm.
