STERLING, KAN. – The University of Saint Mary softball team split with Sterling Wednesday afternoon in Sterling, Kan. The Spires fell 5-2 in game one and responded with an 8-7 victory in the second game.
The Spires are now 3-13 overall and 2-2 KCAC.
GAME FLOW
In game one Saint Mary was first to score after Hailey Reece reached base on a walk and was knocked in after a shallow hit to left field by Julissa Serrano. Sterling would respond quickly with two runs to take the lead.
Ashley Whaley started the top of the second inning with a double hit deep to left field and would score after Alexis Solis knocked her in to tie the game up 2-2.
The Warriors would score three more runs and hold off the Spires to secure the first game.
Teanne Edens took the win on the mound for the Warriors, and Paige Siewert took the loss on the mound for the Spires.
Solis went 2-for-2 at the plate and had one RBI. Serrano went 1-for-2 at the plate and had one RBI.
It game two, there was no score until the third inning when Samantha Torres was brought in after Mara Davis laid down a bunt to put the Spires up 1-0.
Saint Mary would extend their lead in the fourth inning after a shot to left field by Hazel Faz brought in Whaley and Maddison Carr. The Spires led 4-1 before the Warriors got hot and scored four runs.
The Spires did not roll over despite trailing 5-4 going into the final inning. Serrano would spark the comeback after hitting a double to deep left field which fueled the Spires' rally. Solis would follow with a double of her own that scored a run to tie the game up. With two runners on, Carr doubled to left-center to score two more runs for Saint Mary. Carr would eventually score after an RBI by Camille Reyes to put the Spires up 8-4. The Warriors came close, but the Spires held on defensively to take game two.
Torres took the win from the mound for Saint Mary, and Mia Luques took the loss from the mound for Sterling.
Faz went 3-for-4 at the plate and had two RBI's. Carr also had two RBI's.
WHATS AHEAD FOR THE SPIRES
Saint Mary will continue their road stretch and travel to Salina, Kan. this Friday to take on Kansas Wesleyan University in another conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 4:00 pm.
