WINFIELD, KAN. - The University of Saint Mary softball swept Southwestern on the road Sunday afternoon. The Spires bats got hot late in both games to allow them to pull away. The final score of game one was 4-1, and 9-1 in game two.

The Spires are now 8-16 overall and 6-4 KCAC.

GAME ONE
It was a scoreless game with few hits until the top of the sixth inning. Kai-Tierra Anderson started things off by reaching base on a walk. Her teammate Hailey Reece then bunted to advance the runner and would be safe at first. Samantha Torres would then clear the bases with a shot to left field and would later score on a pass ball. The Spires would stay hot and Hazel Faz tripled to make the score 4-0. The Moundbuilders responded with one run of their own but the Spires defense was held on to win the first game.

Torres had a double and two RBI. Faz had a triple and had one RBI.

Katlyn Schiefen took the win from inside the circle for Saint Mary. MacKenzie Lyons took the loss inside the circle for Southwestern.

GAME TWO
Both teams scored a run in the second inning. Faz doubled to right field to put herself in scoring position. Ashley Whaley would then single to left to bring in the Spires first run of the game. Things would be quiet until the fifth inning when the bats got hot again for the Spires. Paige Siewert reached base on a grounder and an error. Anderson then singled to bring in another run for Saint Mary. Another hit by Torres brought in two more runs to make the score 4-1. She would later score after a hit by Julissa Serrano. The bats stayed hot for the rest of the game and the Spires would score four more runs and secure the sweep.

Torres went 3-for-4 at the plate and had four RBI. Reece went 2-for-3 at the plate and had one RBI. Anderson went 2-for-4 at the plate and had one RBI.

Siewert got the win in the circle for Saint Mary. Hannah Foltz took the loss inside the circle for Southwestern.

WHATS AHEAD FOR THE SPIRES
Saint Mary returns home to take on Tabor College in another conference doubleheader this Wednesday. Game one will start at 2:00 pm.
