Baseball Falls To Friends Friday

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary baseball team had a rough time finding a rhythm on offense as they fell in a doubleheader to Friends University today, losing 13-3 and 11-2.

The Spires are now 10-21 overall and 7-17 in the KCAC.

Friends got the scoring started in the third inning in the first game with a run. The Falcons would take a 4-0 lead after five innings before Saint Mary put some runs on the board. The Spires found a rhythm in the sixth when they scored two runs in the inning. Alex Guevara-Moya scored the first run on a fielder's choice by Peyton Garvin. Daunte Freeman would later score on another fielder's choice as the Spires trailed 4-2.

Friends would take control of the game later down the stretch scoring three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth. Gilbert Rondon added one more run in the eighth for the Spires on his first home run of the year. The Falcons however would hang on for the victory.

Six different Spires had one hit in the game, while Rondon and Garvin each had one RBI. Easton Barnes was charged with the loss on the mound.

Friends would continue to find momentum in the second game of the day. The Falcons took a 1-0 lead after two innings before the Spires struck for two runs in the third. With two outs, the Falcons issued two walks to the Spires where David Ramirez took advantage of the opportunity. Ramirez hit a single to left field – scoring Bryan Fuentes and Freeman as the Spires led 2-1.

Saint Mary however, would go scoreless the rest of the way while the Falcons scored 10 more runs in the game to take the 11-2 win.

Ramirez led the team with two hits and two RBI, while Freeman was charged with the loss on the mound.
