MCPHERSON, KS. – The University of Saint Mary softball team battled, but fell 1-0, and 2-1 to McPherson Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog Park. The Spires forced the Bulldogs to extra innings in game one, and fell just short in game two.
The Spires are now 11-23 overall and 9-11 in the KCAC.
GAME ONE
The Spires battled throughout the entire game as the defense was outstanding and held the Bulldogs scoreless throughout the entire game and forced extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth inning, a runner scored to end the game 1-0.
Christie Betker took the win inside the circle for McPherson. Paige Siewert took the loss inside the circle for Saint Mary and had seven strikeouts.
GAME TWO
It was another tight game defensively as both teams were held scoreless until the third inning. The Spires had two outs when Mara Davis reached first on a wild throw, and would later steal second to put herself in scoring position. A single by Hailey Reece advanced her further and then a shot to center field by Alexis Solis allowed her to score. The Bulldogs responded with a run to tie the game up 1-1. McPherson was able to put up one more run and hold onto the lead to take game two.
Solis went 2-for-3 at the plate and had one RBI.
Brittany Baroni took the win from inside the circle for McPherson. Samantha Torres took the loss from inside the circle for Saint Mary.
UP NEXT
The Spires will travel to Lindsborg, Ks. next Tuesday April 23. to take on Bethany College in a doubleheader. The first game will start at 5 pm.
