STERLING, KAN. – The University of Saint Mary women's soccer team topped Sterling College 3-1 Saturday on the road to pick up their first conference win.
The Spires are now 3-2-1 on the season, and 1-0-1 in the KCAC.
Saint Mary came out aggressive as they took the first eight shots of the game that would miss wide or be saved by the goalie. The Spires would get on the board first after Emily Wilson kicked it passed the goalie on a penalty kick. At the half, Saint Mary led Sterling 1-0.
Almost immediately in the second half, another goal was kicked in by Wilson with the assist from Megan McMillen. Sterling would respond with a goal of their own to make the score 2-1. Anna Soetaert then followed to seal the win for the Spires, after kicking in the decisive goal from a pass by Amanda Martin with just over 14 minutes left.
"It was a strong team effort today," head coach Justin Seever said. "We controlled majority of the possession. Emily (Wilson) buried her penalty kick off a foul drawn by Anna (Soetaert) Emily found the back of the net to start the second half off a free kick from Megan (McMillen), Amanda (Martin) slotted Soetaert home on cheeky thru ball and a nice finish to seal the win. Great team defense today and a needed three points. Looking forward to the challenge coming up away to KWU this week."
Saint Mary totaled 16 shots, with nine on goal. Ross and Wilson led the team with three shots apiece. Brittany Ortiz and Natasha Webster each had two shots on goal. Lauryn Airy had three saves.
Next up, the Spires continue on the road as they will travel to Salina, Kan. to take on Kansas Wesleyan University on Oct. 2. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m.
