Men's Soccer Plays To Draw With Moundbuilders

WINFIELD, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary men's soccer team traded goals with Southwestern on the road Saturday night, as both teams played to a 2-2 double-overtime draw.

The Spires open their 2020 season at 0-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the KCAC.

Both teams went scoreless in the first half as Saint Mary took four total shots in the period. Roshod Nembhard took the first shot with 29:45 left in the half, but his opportunity would go wide of the goal. Nembhard had another chance at the 25:42 mark, but the shot hit the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

Jose Martinez got the ball back in possession for the Spires seconds later and his shot would sail wide of the goal. The Spires were able to open the scoring in the second half at the 35:48 mark however, when Paul Trejo received a pass from Osvaldo Reyes to kick the ball past the goalkeeper and give the team a 1-0 lead. Southwestern would tie the game at 1-1 with 17:12 remaining, but the Spires counterattacked with their second goal from Sabino Lozano at the 15:36 mark.

The Spires defense locked down late in the match, but the Moundbuilders were able to find an opportunity with 12 seconds left when they scored to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team was able to connect on a goal in both overtime periods as the teams fought to a draw.

Lozano and Nembhard each had three total shots in the game, while Blake Kuehl led the goalkeeper crew with seven saves.
