Football Slips To Ottawa At Home

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary football team held a 10-0 lead in the second quarter, but Ottawa University was able to fight back and outscore the Spires 35-7 in the final three quarters of the game Saturday afternoon at Berkel Memorial Stadium.

Saint Mary is now 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the KCAC on the season.

Saint Mary started out on fire against Ottawa, putting up 10 points in the first two quarters. After a field goal from Chris Felts in the first quarter, Cole Nequette found the endzone to begin the second quarter for a 13-yard touchdown run. Saint Mary would have their next possession stalled after a Braves sack to force a punt. Ottawa would score their first touchdown with 8:05 remaining in the first quarter after a 77-yard touchdown run from Derrick Curtis.

With the Spires leading at halftime by three, Ottawa would be the first to extend the lead in the third quarter. Curtis would take his second touchdown of the game 60 yards to give the Braves a four-point lead. Saint Mary bounced back however after Nequette found a hole and sprinted 74 yards for a touchdown to put the Spires up 17-14 with 11:41 left in the frame. Ottawa would later get a touchdown carry from Colton Davis to give the team a 21-17 lead. Saint Mary found themselves tracking into the Ottawa redzone, but the Braves forced an interception and took it to the Spires 10-yard line to end the third quarter.

Ottawa would score two more touchdowns in the game and hold off the Spires in the end.

Nequette led the rushing attack with 168 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Hunter Patterson totaled five solo tackles with two tackles for a loss on defense.

Saint Mary will be on the road Nov. 7 when they take on Avila University in Kansas City, Mo. at 12 p.m.
