ATCHISON, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead and battled back and forth with Benedictine College Monday afternoon, but came up just short falling 11-10.
Saint Mary is now 0-6 overall on the season.
Saint Mary got things going early scoring four runs in the first inning. After a few people reached base, Oscar Osorio hit a deep double to knock in two runs. Damian Lomeli then knocked in Peyton Garvin before Osorio scored on a single from Bryan Fuentes.
The Ravens would add a run in the first, but the Spires struck for another run in the second inning. Daunte Freeman singled down the right field line to score Daniel Gonzales. Benedictine would score three runs in the next two innings combined to grab a 7-5 lead. The Spires then loaded the bases in the fifth inning and scored three straight runs to regain the lead.
Both teams would trade punches later on. Saint Mary found themselves down 11-9 before adding a run in the ninth inning. Benedictine was able to hold them to just one run in the inning and won the game.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Fuentes led the team with three hits.
- Osorio, Lomeli and Gonzales each had two RBI.
- Benedictine's Drew Piontek had a game high five RBI.
