Softball Falls In Both Games To Baker Saturday

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary softball team hanged tough in game one of a doubleheader at home against Baker University Saturday, but came up short in the end. The Spires lost both games by scores of 7-4 and 12-0.

Saint Mary is now at 1-7 overall on the season.

GAME 1
The Spires jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hazel Faz started things off with a single to left field. She would later score after Reghan Ross hit it to short and safely reached first because of a wild throw. The Wildcats responded with three runs in the next inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Meredith Amrhein was walked and was moved to scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Mara Davis. A few batters later, Faz hit it to third and was safe at first after a misplayed grounder that the third basemen dove for, which allowed Amrhein to score to tie the game up 3-3. Baker would score a run in the third to take the lead. Both teams scored a run in the fifth, but the Wildcats would score two more runs and hold on defensively for the win.

GAME 1
Saint Mary was shutout in the second contest that lasted just five innings. Baker scored three runs in the first inning. The Wildcats then scored nine runs throughout the rest of the game. Saint Mary had a chance to score in the first three innings, but were unable to capitalize with a total of five runners left on base.

INSIDE THE STATS:
- Faz had a team high three hits.
- Three different Spires had an RBI.
- Saint Mary had two double-plays on the day.

UP NEXT
Saint Mary returns to action on Feb. 25 at home against College of Saint Mary in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
