Baseball Falters At McPherson

MCPHERSON, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary baseball team began KCAC play today against McPherson College, where they fell in both games by scores of 29-0 and 10-9.

Saint Mary is now 1-12 overall and 0-2 on the season.

GAME 1
McPherson broke out of the gate early and often in the first contest of the day. The Bulldogs got out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and later connected with two big innings. Saint Mary tried to get their offense going, but were unable to manage. The Spires totaled just three hits in the game, while McPherson had 20.

GAME 2
Saint Mary fell behind 6-0 after two innings in the second game. The Spires would then put together a string of innings where they scored at least one run. Daniel Gonzales started things off with a solo home run in the third. Gilbert Rondon sparked the offense in the fourth with a double to score Damian Lomeli, before Antonio Valentin hit a two-run shot to cut the deficit to two.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Spires fought back in the fifth. Daunte Freeman knocked in Alex Guevara-Moya on a single. He would later score on a McPherson error. The Bulldogs took a 10-6 lead after scoring three runs on their side of the inning. Saint Mary would cut into the lead again in the sixth to try and mount a comeback. Gonzales, Goss and Guevara-Moya all scored in the inning to cut the deficit to one. Saint Mary tried one last time to tie the game in the seventh, but the Bulldogs held them off.

INSIDE THE STATS:
- Peyton Garvin and Guevara-Moya led the team with two hits.
- McPherson pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.
- Garvin and Valentin each had two RBI.
