LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's softball team battled (RV)Central Methodist University Saturday, but fell 8-2 in game one, and 12-10 in game two despite a great effort in the final inning. Saint Mary fell 12-10. Alexis Solis hit two homeruns on the day.
The Spires are now 1-9 overall.
GAME 1
The Eagles held a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning. On a 3-2 count, Solis hit the ball and watched it sail over the left field fence to give the Spires life with a 3-1 score. CMU answered with three more runs in the fifth inning, to build their lead to five. In the bottom of the sixth, Reghan Ross got on after a single to left-center, and Delaney Hess came in to pinch run. Hess would later steal second to move into scoring position. Solis hit a sacrifice fly to advance Hess to third, and she would eventually score after a bobble by the third baseman. The Eagles scored one more run and held on defensively to secure game one.
GAME 2
Central Methodist wasted no time as they scored four runs in the first inning, but Saint Mary did not fold. Hazel Faz reached base on a walk, and would later score on a single to right field by Ross. After holding the Eagles scoreless in the second inning, Hess quickly got on base with a single up the middle and would reach third on a bobble from the center fielder. Faz would then get the RBI with a hit to second base. After another three up and three down inning defensively, the Spires kept the momentum going on offense.
Hailey Reece got on after a single to short, and would then steal second. Moments later, Reece scored after a wild throw from the Eagles catcher. Later on in the inning, Megan Johnson got on with a walk and was moved to third on a bunt. Hess stepped up to the plate and ripped one down the right field line to bring in the tying run to make it 4-4. CMU take a. 8-5 lead after the fourth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Spires trailed 12-7. On a 1-1 count, Solis jacked another over the left field fence for a three-run homer. Saint Mary battled, but fell short.
