Spires Baseball Stomps Falcons Wednesday

LEAVENWORTH, KAN. – The University of Saint Mary baseball team stomped Kansas Christian College at home on Wednesday afternoon. The final score was 15-5 in seven innings.

The Spires are now 4-16 overall and 2-6 in the KCAC.

GAME FLOW
Saint Mary came out hot and never looked back. After a quick three-up and three-down at the top of the inning, the Spires wasted no time getting on base. Alex Guevara-Moya was hit by a pitch and would quickly get into scoring position with consecutive steals. A single to center field brought in the first run of the game. Smart and aggressive base running allowed the Spires to build an 8-0 lead on three hits. In the next inning, Antonio Valentin hit a shot to left-center and would score after a triple from Bryan Fuentes.

The Falcons got on the board and trailed 12-3, but the Spires responded in the fourth. Kruz Wahwahsuck led off and reached base on a walk and two batters later, Adrian Garcia sent a shot to left field for a single. Caleb Hewes then stepped up to the plate and smashed one to right field to score both runners on base. Mark Lewis scored the final run for the Spires after the third basemen missed the catch to make it 15-3. KCC would add two more runs, but Saint Mary handled business to pick up the victory.

INSIDE THE STATS
-Blake Sanders had five strikeouts.
-Three Spires hit a double in Garvin, Hewes, and Valentin.
-Saint Mary had eight steals.

UP NEXT
The Spires return to action this Saturday in Winfield, Kan. where they take on Southwestern College in a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m. with game two to follow.
