LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's softball team got their offense going late in a doubleheader – falling 13-8 and 4-3 against Missouri Valley College at home Wednesday.
The Spires are now 1-13 overall.
GAME 1
The Vikings led 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Allyson Dias got things started for the Spires with a single up the middle. Hazel Faz then smashed one to right field for a triple which put Saint Mary on the board. With two outs, Reghan Ross got a single and cut the deficit to two runs. MVC had a six run lead in the sixth inning. With an 0-0 count, Carlyee Arndt cranked one over the right-center fence for a two run homer. The Vikings added four more runs to their lead, and despite a little rally, the Spires were unable to make the comeback.
GAME 2
USM trailed 4-0 in heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Hailey Reece sparked a rally with a nice hit to left-center field. She would later score with a single by Alexis Solis. Later in the inning, the Spires had bases loaded and would bring in another run after Sierra Gerdts was walked. The rally continued and Mara Davis made it a one run ballgame with a hit to third. The Spire had all the momentum, but it was taken away when Faz smashed one deep and the center fielder snagged it to end the inning. MVC held on defensively the rest of the way to get the sweep.
INSIDE THE STATS
-Maria Howard had four strikeouts.
-Arndt went 4-for-6 at the plate and had three RBI.
-Davis went 3-for-3 in game two.
-Ross and Allyson Dias each had two hits.
UP NEXT
The Spires will compete in the Arizona tournament starting on Mar. 8 against Park University-Gilbert. The first game is set to begin at 11 a.m.
