Spires Open Season With 2-1 Win At Tabor

HILLSBORO, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's soccer team scored two first half goals and held off a comeback from Tabor College Saturday afternoon, to secure a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays at Joel H. Wiens Stadium.

The Spires are now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the KCAC.

Things got going early for Saint Mary when Tabor committed a foul in the box, awarding the Spires with a penalty kick at the 36:48 mark. Emily Wilson would take the opportunity and put the ball into the net to give the team a 1-0 lead.

Tabor would miss on two opportunities in the next 10 minutes. The Spires increased their lead to 2-0 when Natasha Webster got the ball of a rebound from the goalkeeper and punched it into the net. The Spires would take a 2-0 lead, but Tabor found an opportunity late in the second half. With 9:56 left in the game, the BlueJays earned a goal from Allison Cubbon to trim the deficit to one goal, after the ball bounced around in the box.

The Spires survived three late opportunistic chances from Tabor in the final minutes and would come out on top with their first win.

Webster and Wilson each had one goal in the game, while Emilie Korenek recorded two saves in goal. Tabor totaled a game high 14 shots and Saint Mary had four.

Saint Mary is scheduled to travel to Bartlesville, Okla. on Sept. 26 to take on Oklahoma Wesleyan University at 5 p.m.
