YORK, Neb. – The University of Saint Mary men's soccer team traveled to York, Nebraska to take on the York College Panthers Wednesday afternoon for a conference showdown. After going down 4-0 in the first half, the Spires fought hard in the second half putting three goals together, but still fell short 5-3 in the end.
The Spires are now (7-7) on the season and (2-7) in the conference.
The first half was tough for the Spires as the defense allowed four goals to the Panthers, while the offense couldn't put anything together. Goals came from Archford Manduvi at the 10:41 minute mark, Johan Rodriguez at 14:56, Tamas Sebestyen at 28:59 and 39:38.
The second half, however, the Spires came out with some vengeance. The defense was able to shut down every run the Panthers made, while the offense went to work. With goals from Sabino Lozano at the 51:38 minute mark, Paul Trejo at 72:19, and Oscar Sandoval at 78:05, the Spires closed the margin to one with less then 10 minutes to go.
Unfortunately, the Spires weren't able to muster anything together to tie the game. The York Panthers ended up icing the game with another goal from Manduvi at the 89:18 marker. Closing the game to a 5-3 loss for the Spires.
The Spires will be back in action on Saturday where they will host the Avila Eagles at 8:00 PM.
