Spires Battle With MVC Comes Up Short

WICHITA, Kan. - The University of Saint Mary baseball team came up short in a doubleheader versus Missouri Valley University, falling 6-5 and 15-11 today.

Saint Mary is now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the KCAC.

Missouri Valley answered first scoring three runs leading in the bottom third, 3-0. The Spires answered back in the top of the 4th inning by scoring one run to cut the deficit by two, 3-1. It was until the top of the 6th that Daniel Gonzales and Jacob Honadel each blasted 2-run homeruns to give the Spires the lead at 5-3. Missouri Valley came up big to tie the game in the 7th inning at 5-5, before the Spires came up short from a walk off single to lose 6-5.

In the second game for the Spires, Missouri Valley answered first to take a 4-0 lead. In the fifth inning the Spires offense seemed to take off and rally – scoring seven runs followed by a double from Gilbert Rondon who started the spark to make it 7-4 USM. Following their hot fifth inning the Spires were able to collect four more run followed by three doubles in the inning by Rondon, Gonzales, and Francisco Villarreal. The Spires seemed to struggle with their pitching as the game progressed allowing Missouri Valley to gain the lead and walk off again in the last inning with a 15-11 win.

Gonzales collected four RBI, one home run, and three hits, Rondon led the team with two doubles and Honadel collected four RBI and two hits.

Saint Mary is back in action on Feb. 22nd at the Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy to take on Baker University at 5 p.m.
