Softball Falls In Doubleheader To Doane

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Saint Mary softball team fell in a doubleheader to Doane College Thursday at the KC Urban Youth Academy, 5-3 and 12-2.

The Spires are now 0-4 overall on the season.

GAME 1
Doane would take an early 2-0 advantage after the first inning, as they scored both of their runs with two outs. With a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, the Spires offense found a spark as Riley Piattoni singled in Allyson Dias. Victoria Gutierrez later drew a walk with the bases loaded, which led to Hailey Reece crossing the plate to trim the deficit to 3-2.

The Tigers scored two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead, but the Spires offense managed to cut into the deficit again in the bottom half. Dias would single with one out in the frame and later scored again when Piattoni found a soft spot in center field for a base hit.

The score would stay at 5-3 into the bottom of the seventh, where Saint Mary was then shutout, falling in the first contest.

Reece and Piattoni each had two hits in the game, while Piattoni added two RBI and Gutierrez had one.

GAME 2
Both teams would add one run in the first inning of the second game. Reece led off the inning for the Spires with a deep triple to left field and later scored on a single from Piattoni.

Neither team would take advantage of some opportunities in the next few innings, but the tie would be broken in the fifth frame as Doane posted five runs to take a 6-1 lead. Saint Mary added another run in the fifth as Piattoni continued her surge at the plate – knocking in Isabelle McCarty to trim the deficit at 6-2.

Doane would add more runs in the sixth and seventh innings and close out the game with the win.

Piattoni led the team with two hits and two RBI in the second game.
