LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Continuing their win streak, the University of Saint Mary women's basketball team defeated Southwestern extending their win streak by two, 53-47 inside the Ryan Sports Center.
The Spires are 3-6 overall and 3-5 in KCAC play.
A close battle in the first quarter put both teams looking to retain the lead. Southwestern answered first with a three pointer made by Amanda Graddy, 3-0. Saint Mary didn't waste any time answering back with a two pointer by Kaitlyn Fisher, 3-2. Southwestern was able to quickly hold the Spires to just six more points to end the first quarter, 10-8. Southwestern was able to capitalize their lead in the second quarter with the Spires down, 14-8. The Spires were still able to come together and figure out their offense quickly with an offensive rebound by Daija Planas, capitalizing and scoring two points for the Spires to tie the game, 14-14. With both teams battling back-to-back, finding themselves tied again, 28-28. With two seconds, left on the clock Jerrica Johnson sank in both free throws to end the half, 30-28.
Saint Mary seemed to hold Southwestern the second half of the game. The Spires were able to gain an eight-point lead over Southwestern from a two pointer made by Planas, 39-31. The Spires were able to hold Southwestern to just four more point to end the third quarter, 43-35. The Spires were able to get hot extending their biggest lead of the game from a two pointer made by Planas, 50-39. The Spires were able to hold Southwestern to just five more point to win the ball game, 53-47.
Macy Walker led the team with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds on the night, while Johnson had 12 points.
