Softball Falls to Central Methodist

Fayette, Mo. – The University of Saint Mary softball team was swept by Central Methodist in a doubleheader on Thursday by a score of 10-2 in both contests. The Spires struggled commanding their pitches and were unable to come out with a victory in either game.

The Spires are now 5-12 overall on the season.

GAME 1
The Spires struggled with Central Methodist's offense in the first inning allowing them to score six runs with four hits, 6-0. Central Methodist was able to follow their momentum leading up to the bottom of the second to score two more runs making it 8-0. The Spires tried to catch a spark offensively and get a late push in the top of the fifth scoring two runs to cut their deficit to seven, 9-2. Central Methodist was able to score one more run in the bottom of the sixth to run rule the Spires, 10-2.

Hailey Reece lead the Spires offensively with two hits and Riley Piattoni collected the Spires only RBI.

GAME 2
The Spires were able to come out firing in the first inning with Reece whom continued to keep her bat hot and singled to shallow left, followed by a fielder's choice RBI by Hazel Faz, 1-0. Central Methodist came back firing in the bottom of the second to tie things up, 1-1. Both team pitched efficiently until the Spires were able to break the tie with a sacrifice fly to right by Allyson Dias to score Josefina Gutierrez, 2-1. Central Methodist seemed to catch a spark in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs to break the Spires lead, 5-2. The Spires tried to make a push offensively, but were unable to score in the top of the fifth trailing Central Methodist by three. Central Methodist was able to continue their rally in the bottom of the fifth to add five more runs and defeat the Spires, 10-2.

Mara Davis, Reece and Gutierrez collected a hit for the Spires followed by Dias collecting a hit and RBI.

UP NEXT
Saint Mary is scheduled to travel back home to play a double header on Saturday to face Briar Cliff University at 1 pm.
