HILLSBORO, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary men's soccer team held on for the 2-1 win at Tabor College Tuesday afternoon, despite a late charge from the BlueJays in the waning minutes.
The Spires are now 1-3-1 overall and 1-2 in the KCAC.
The scoring happened early on in the game, with all three goals coming in the first half. Osvaldo Reyes got the scoring started with a goal at the 22:11 mark to give Saint Mary the early boost at 1-0. Tabor would quickly tie the game three minutes later, but the Spires did not wait long to take back the advantage as Reyes found Sabino Lozano for the Spires' second goal with just over 19 minutes remaining in the first half.
In the second half Saint Mary outshot Tabor 3-1. Lozano and Reyes combined for all three shots, but all of the shots were saved by Tabor's goalkeeper to keep the game at a 2-1 score.
Tabor made one final push in the remaining minutes, including two straight corner kicks to try and tie the game. Saint Mary's defense however was able to halt the BlueJays and secure the team's first win of the season in the end.
Lozano and Reyes each had one goal, while Blake Kuehl and Enrique Gonzales each recorded one save.
