Softball Splits At Sterling

STERLING, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary softball team split a doubleheader with Sterling College on Saturday, falling 5-4 in eight innings before coming back and defeating the Warriors 6-4 in the second contest.

The Spires are now 6-15 overall and 1-4 in the KCAC on the season.

GAME 1
Saint Mary added a run in the second inning as Isabelle McCarty scored on a single from Victoria Gutierrez, but the Warriors would tie it up at one in the bottom half. Sterling would score two runs in the third inning and take a 3-1 lead all the way to the fifth.

The Spires would come up with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Riley Piattoni knocked in Hailey Reece with a single before Madisyn Thompson hit a huge double to score Mara Davis and Piattoni. Sterling would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, before walking it off in the bottom of the eighth in extras to take the win.

Reece had two hits in the game, while Thompson added two RBI.

GAME 2
Piattoni drove in Reece to start the scoring for the Spires in game two, in the first inning. Sterling would tie things up in the third frame, before both teams went scoreless over the next two innings.

The Spires added two runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead and extended it to 6-1 in the seventh. Sterling would make an attempt at a comeback in the bottom half – scoring three runs, but the Spires escaped the jam to secure the win.

Reece and McCarty each had three hits in the game, while McCarty also added two RBI.

Saint Mary will travel to Salina, Kan. to play a doubleheader against Kansas Wesleyan on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
