Spires Storm Past Southwestern

Leavenworth, Kan. - The University of Saint Mary baseball team looked to start their home series against Southwestern College strong and came up victorious in a double header today, winning 12-10 and 17-5.

Saint Mary is now 3-16 overall and 3-6 in the KCAC.

In the first game the Spires came out swinging and scored three runs in the top of the first thanks to a couple of hits by the Spires, 3-0. Southwestern looked to chip away and earned a run in the top of the third, 3-1. Southwestern followed their momentum in the third inning and scored three more runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead, 4-3. The Spires looked for a comeback and answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a single to center field by Steele Sadler to score Antonio Valentin and take the lead, 7-4. Southwestern kept their heads up and were able to earn one run in the bottom of the seventh, 7-5. The Spires struggled with their pitching command in the top of the eighth and allowed Southwestern to tie the game up, 7-7. As the Spires looked to break away from Southwestern in the bottom of the eighth, they are cashed in five more runs followed by a three run homerun by Daniel Gonzales, 12-7. The Spires looked to close it out but Southwestern was not going out without a fight and scored three more runs in the bottom of the ninth but the Spires were able to come out on top, 12-10.

Sadler collected two hits for the Spires followed by Peyton Garvin who collected two hits and three RBIs, Gonzales led the team with four RBIs.

In game two the Spires looked to follow their momentum from game one and took the lead in the bottom of the first with four runs thanks to RBI singles by Damian Lomeli and Oscar Osorio, 4-0. Daulton East pitched efficiently as Southwestern struggled to come up with a big inning to challenge the Spires. The Spires were able to score another run in the bottom of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly by Lomeli to score Gonzales, 5-0. Southwestern had a big inning in the top of the fifth to score four runs and cut the deficit by one, 5-4. The Spires weren't discouraged and had a huge inning in the bottom of the fifth. The Spires scored 12 runs with seven hits for the Spires followed by a couple of errors from Southwestern, 17-4. The Spires dominated offensively but Southwestern was able to chip away one run in the bottom of the seventh but the Spires were able to come up with the victory, 17-5.

Lomeli and Osorio collected two hits and two RBIs, Gonzales collected two hits for the Spires and Valentin led the team with three RBIs.
