LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - The University of Saint Mary baseball team came up short in game one to McPherson College Saturday, falling 16-1. The second game was a thriller where the Spires were able to fight back and pick up a 6-5 win – giving the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
Saint Mary is now 1-11 overall and 1-1 in the KCAC.
The Spires got off to a slow start in game one giving up five runs in the top of the second to make it 5-0. The Spires did not fold as Steele Sadler got Saint Mary on the board with a two out RBI double in the bottom of the 5th. The Spires fell in game one, 16-1.
In game two the Spires started off stronger – taking an early lead in the first of off Antonio Valentin's RBI double. The Spires did a good job early in the second game slowing down the hot bats of McPherson holding them to just two runs through three innings and only down 2-1. Then, in the bottom of the third Saint Mary heated up and rallied for three runs making the score 4-2. The two teams traded off runs throughout the middle innings and by the start of the 7th the Spires had a 5-4 lead. The Spires gave up just one run to send the game to the bottom of the 7th. With the bases loaded DH Oscar Osorio hit a ground ball to the third baseman who threw an errant ball scoring Myles Thompson to win their first game of the season, and giving McPherson their first loss.

Saint Mary will return Sunday at home at 1 p.m. to finish the series against McPherson.
