LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary softball team hosted Avila University for its Senior Day on Tuesday, where the Spires fell 2-1 in extra innings in the first contest and won 3-2 in the second game. Prior to the contests, seniors Josefina Gutierrez, Sierra Gerdts, Reghan Ross, Hailey Reece and Mara Davis were honored for their contributions to the program.

The Spires finish their season at 13-32 overall and 6-16 in the KCAC.

GAME 1
Both teams went down to the wire in extra innings in the first game. Avila would get on the board first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Their advantage would hold until the fifth inning when Reece doubled in Davis to tie the game at one.

Both squads would go to the seventh inning where neither team was able to score. The Eagles came away with a run in the eighth inning with the international tie breaker rule in place, while the Spires were unable to tie it in the bottom half to continue the game.

Reece, Davis and Delaney Hess each had two hits for the Spires.

GAME 2
Saint Mary would strike for two runs in the first inning of the second game after Hazel Faz and Hess each earned RBI. Both teams would cash in on a run in the third inning as the Spires took a 3-1 lead. Hess hit a triple to right field to bring around Faz.

Avila would chip in with one run in the fourth to trim the deficit to one at 3-2. The Spires faced a bit of trouble in the top of the seventh, but with two outs Reece made a diving catch to seal the win for the Spires.
