Leavenworth, Kan. - The University of Saint Mary baseball team slipped against Kansas Wesleyan, 11-1 and 8-6 in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Saint Mary is now 3-23 overall and 3-14 in the KCAC.
In the first game of the double header it seemed as if both offense and pitching were not sufficient for the Spires. The Coyotes were able take the early lead in the top of the third, 3-0. The Spires were able to chip away one run in the bottom of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly by Steele Sadler to score Alex Guevara, 3-1. The Spires struggled with their offense and pitching command and were unable to make a comeback as the Coyotes collected more runs. The Spires fell in the first game of the doubleheader, 11-1.
Daniel Gonzales, Damian Lomeli and Antonio Valentin each collected one hit for the Spires.
In the second game the Coyotes continued to push with their offense and jumped out to an early four run lead in the top of the third, 4-0. The Spires looked for a comeback and scored two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single by Gonzales to score Sadler, 4-2. The Coyotes extended their lead with another run in the top of the fifth, 5-2. The Spires tried to stop the Coyotes offensively but allowed them to add two more runs in the top of the sixth, 7-2. The Spires looked to jump back into the game and rallied in four runs in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a couple of hits and a double by Sadler to score Kawika Hubbell, 7-6. The Coyotes capitalized in the top of the seventh to extend their lead by two, 8-6. The Spires looked for more runs followed by two key at bats by Gonzales and Lomeli but were unable to score and slipped, 8-6.
Gonzales led the offense with two hits and Sadler collected three RBIs.
