LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary softball team split a doubleheader with Tabor College today, falling 4-3 and winning 7-6 in eight innings.
The Spires are now 11-20 overall and 6-6 in the KCAC on the season.
GAME 1
Saint Mary had a tight battle with Tabor in the first game and was able to strike first. After a double from Hailey Reece, Hazel Faz would later knock her in with an RBI single. Tabor would tie the game at 1-1 in the second inning before adding a run in the fourth to take the 2-1 lead.
The Spires would tie the game after Reece got on base from a Tabor error and later scored. Both teams would go into the seventh inning tied at 3-3 after each team added a run in the sixth inning. Tabor would come out victorious however after adding a run in the seventh, before holding the Spires scoreless in the bottom half.
Reece and Riley Piattoni each had two hits for the Spires.
GAME 2
Tabor would go up 1-0 in the second game after adding a run in the second inning. Saint Mary however, added two runs in the fourth off a costly throwing error from the Bluejays. Tabor would come back though after an RBI single.
After Tabor tied the game at 2-2, they would crank a three-run home run in the fifth inning to take the lead. Saint Mary added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning after Reece tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly ball from Reghan Ross.
The Spires would find a way to comeback and win scoring two runs to send it to extra innings in the seventh. They then added two runs off a Bluejays error in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.
Reece had three hits and scored three runs, while Cordova had two RBI.
