WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary Men's soccer team traveled to Friends University Saturday afternoon to take on the Falcons. The Spires had a 2-1 lead at halftime, but Friends managed to score two goals in the second half with the final one coming with less than four minutes left as the Spires fell 3-2.
Saint Mary now sits at 5-1 overall and 0-1 to begin KCAC play.
The Spires started the game a little off-balanced, where the Falcons managed to strike first with a cross-over corner kick at the 1:20 minute mark. Not too long after though the Spires regained focus and Gustavo Freitas scored the Spires' first goal by getting behind the keeper and passing one into the net. With the game tied 1-1 and the first half ending, Paul Trejo scored the go-ahead goal by gaining possession off of a turnover near the box - giving the Spires the 2-1 lead going into the half.
Coming out of the break, the Falcons were able to capitalize and score right away tying the game at 2-2. With tensions building up and the clock burning down, both teams seemed poised to make a last-minute effort. However, the Falcons managed to take the lead with 3:40 left in the game. Ending the game with a final score of 3-2.
The Spires will return to action on Wednesday at home when they host Southwestern College at 7:30 p.m.
