Spires Roll to a 41-0 Win Over Bethany

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Football team took on the Bethany Swedes Saturday, resulting in a 41-0 win. The Spires are now 3-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The first quarter started with a Spires possession that resulted in a six-yard rushing touchdown by Raymond Webster that gave Saint Mary the early 6-0 lead. After the teams traded punts, Saint Mary would go down and score thanks to a two-yard touchdown run by Jartavious Martin.

Martin later found the end zone again to start the second quarter to make the score 19-0. The following drive by the Swedes resulted in an interception returned for a 57-yard touchdown by Garrett Carter that got called back due to a penalty. The offense did not let that affect them as Erick Covington found Josh Walker in the back of the end zone to put Saint Mary up 27-0 heading into halftime.

The second half featured stout defensive play by the Spires as they forced multiple three-and-outs, including another interception, this time by Landon Beecham. The Spire's ensuing possession stalled, and Bethany got the ball back, only to turn it over after Hennessey Thomas forced a fumble that was recovered by Chinedu Nwadike. The offense capitalized on the turnover as Covington found Alejandro Martinez-Loera for a 24-yard touchdown to put Saint Mary up 34-0.

The following Bethany drive resulted in another forced fumble, this time by Aidan Arnold, recovered by Thomas. A punt from the Swedes, after a three and out, led to a punt return for a touchdown by Walker that went for 49-yards to make the score 41-0. The fourth quarter featured another fumble recovery for Thomas as both teams were shut out to end the game.

Saint Mary combined for 272 yards rushing today as Arnold led the way on defense with eight total tackles. The defense as a whole forced four turnovers, and the offense had 406 yards of total offense.
