Lawrence, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team took on the Park Pirates Friday, winning 85-77. The Spires are now 2-2 overall heading into a matchup against College of the Ozarks.
Things went back and forth to open the first half, but after back-to-back threes from Mason Belcher, the Spires took a 20-16 lead. Saint Mary hit four more three-point shots after Belcher's, and Park was able to keep up with the scoring as USM held a 32-27 lead with five minutes to go in the half. Luke Mackey and Belcher combined for three more three-pointers going up 45-41 heading into halftime.
Shortly after the start of the second half, the Spires went on a 6-2 scoring run, building a comfortable 67-49 lead. Saint Mary continued the offensive output as Shawn Person and Deshaud St. Martin made multiple free throws to help the Spires out. Braylen Duncan and Cam Southern also made their free throws as time winded down to secure a convincing 85-77 win. Joe Burgos had a season high 22 points along with eight rebound on the night, while Joey Schultz had four blocks.
