Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team hosted the Tabor Blue Jays Wednesday, losing narrowly 62-59. The Spires are now 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the KCAC.
Saint Mary started the game with a 13-2 scoring run that ended with a three from Alanis Delgado. However, the Blue Jays had an answer and made a run of their own, and took the lead right before the end of the first quarter. Alex Specht and Jerrica Johnson made layups to open the second quarter and gave Saint Mary a 21-18 lead. Tabor then made a layup and three three-point shots in a row to go up eight on the Spires. Delgado made another three right before the end of the half to make the score 33-26 in favor of the Blue Jays.
Specht opened the second half with a three to shrink the Tabor lead. The Blue Jays kept up the offensive production throughout the quarter, building a ten-point lead, with the score at 53-43. Saint Mary started the fourth and final quarter rallying back to get within two points of the Blue Jays. Johnson and Paige Pendley brought the Spires within one point, making the score 59-60. Tabor made two important free throws to take a three-point 62-59 lead with just three seconds left. Saint Mary was unable to get a shot off in the last seconds of the game to tie things up, losing 62-59. Johnson led the Spire on offense with 14 points on the night.
