Spires Drop Season Opener to Mid America

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team hosted in Mid America Nazarene Friday night, resulting in an 83 to 68 loss. The Spires are now 0-1 to begin the year.

Saint Mary found themselves down early after Mid-America Nazarene took a quick ten-point lead. Jerrica Johnson and Alanis Delgado accounted for multiple points to get the Spires back into the game. Shelby Salter made two free throws, helpingSaint Mary chip away, going on a run of their own, making the score 45-35 at halftime.

Soon after the start of the second half, the Spires came within eight after Alex Specht hit a three-point shot, making the score 49-43. The Pioneers responded quickly, as they continued to score as well. As the fourth quarter began, Mid America had extended their lead to 17 points. Johnson and Specht continued to score for the Spires, but it was not enough to keep up with the Pioneers, as the final score was 83-68. Lead the Spires in point on the night was Johnson with 24.
