Leavenworth, KS- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted Sterling College on Saturday sweeping the visiting Warriors, winning the first game 1-0 and the second in five innings by a score of 8-0.
Game 1
The Spires were able to score the first and only run of the game on a sacrifice fly hit by Sadie McWilliams that brought in Hazel Faz. This gave the Spires a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. It was the Spires pitching the shined today as Maria Howard recorded her sixth win throwing a no-hitter and striking out six for USM. The performance by Howard was enough to help the Spire hold on to win game one of the doubleheader.
Game 2
In the second game, the Spires came out firing on all cylinders and posted three runs in the first inning capitalizing on a wild pitch and an error by the Warriors. The second inning saw more of the same as the Spires put another three runs on the board making it 6-0 after two innings. Similar to the first game the pitching for USM was excellent as Shelby Mohler had a complete game shutout with three strikeouts. Center fielder Hazel Faz went three for three with a base on ball, two runs, and a run batted in for the Spires in game two. Saint Mary would score two more runs in the fifth making it 8-0 and ending the game.
The Spires take on Kansas Weslyan University for a double header at 2 p.m. Wednesday at home.
