Kansas City, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, to take on the Avila Eagles for a midweek doubleheader and the regular-season finale.
Game 1
Saint Mary would threaten to take the lead early in the game when Sadie McWilliams led off the second inning with a single and worked her way over to third with two outs. However, she would not score as the top half of the inning came to an end after a pop-out to the Avila shortstop. The Eagles would get a run in the bottom half of the second off an RBI single to left.
In the third inning, Maria Howard would get on with one out after she singled to left field. Then Alexis Ray would drop a bunt for a base hit that moved Howard to second. A sacrifice fly would move both runners into scoring position with two outs, but a fly ball to left field would end the top half of the third inning.
The Spires would give up a run in the third and fourth to go down 3-0. Saint Mary would get runners in scoring position with two in the top of the seventh after Allie Cox hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory that moved them over. The runners would not get home after a ground ball to the second baseman ended the inning and the game by a score of 3-0. Both Autum Giordano and McWilliams went two for three in game one.
Game 2
In Game two, starter Shelby Mohler would go the whole game, giving up just two hits, two runs (unearned), and striking out four. The Eagles would get their first run in the second inning after a throwing error from the second baseman, which gave them a 1-0 lead.
The Spires would threaten the Eagle's 1-0 lead in the top half of the fourth when Ray led the inning off with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt and a ground ball to the shortstop, Ray had worked her way to third base with two outs. Then a strikeout would end the inning with the Spires still down 1-0.
In the fifth, the Spires would give up one more run after a two-out single to left field with runners on the corners made the score 2-0. Allyson Dias led off the sixth inning with and walk, and with one out, Ray would get walked. After a sacrifice fly, Dias was on third, but a pop fly to the shortstop would end the threat and the inning. The Spires would not score in the seventh and lost 2-0.
