Leavenworth, Ks- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team split in their Saturday doubleheader against Bethany College.
Game 1
Both teams would get runs in the opening inning of the day's first game, the Spires tied the game up early with a sacrifice fly hit by Peyton Garvin. Things would settle down after the first inning. Then Bethany got a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings, making the score 3-2. The Spires would have an answer of their own after Garvin drove in two runs in the seventh and ninth innings to tie the game up and force extras. Saint Mary then gave up two in the top half of the tenth and attempted to tie the game up once again. Gilbert Rondon would hit a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth, but the Spires were unable to score again, ending the game in a 5-4 score. Garvin led the Spires in game one, going two for four with three RBIs. Starter Yanthony Navarro pitched all ten innings giving up ten hits and striking out six.
Game 2
In what was another nail-bitter, game two was dominated by pitching. The Spires would strike first in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a passed ball and a Rondon single. Started Drake Pingel would also go the complete game for the Spires, giving up seven hits with five strikeouts. The Swedes got a run of their own in the fourth but did not score any more runs, giving the Spires a 2-1 victory. Rondon led the Spires at the plate in game two after going one for three with an RBI.
