Spires Drop Both Games in Doubleheader

Leavenworth, Ks- The University of Saint Mary Softball team dropped both games in their doubleheader against Ottawa University Saturday.

Game 1

In the first inning, the Spires would give up a two-run home run to the Braves and go down 2-0. Saint Mary would get one run back in the first after an error by the Ottawa third baseman. However, the Braves would extend their lead to 6-1 in the third and fourth innings. The Spires would try to chip away at the deficit with an RBI single from Victoria Gutierrez in the fifth and another in the sixth from Abigail Kudym, making it 6-3. Saint Mary would threaten the Brave's lead in the bottom of the seventh but could not bring those runners home and lost 6-3. Madisyn Thompson led the Spires on offense in game one, going two for three with a run.

Game 2

The Spires would hold off the Braves in game two until the third inning after an RBI triple gave Ottawa the 1-0 lead. Starter Shelby Mohler would go the complete game for Saint Mary, giving up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts for the Spires. At the plate, the Spires would struggle to get runs across in the second game leaving six different runners on base throughout the game. In the bottom of the seventh, with runners on first and third, the Spires would try to come back within one run of Ottawa. Two strikeouts followed, and the Spires dropped game two 4-0. Offensively, Autum Giordano led Saint Mary by going two for three in game two.

The Spires will host Oklahoma Wesleyan for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at home.
