Manhattan, KS.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team continued their offensive attack today, winning 10-1 over Manhattan Christian College. The Spire's overall record is now 3-1-1, heading into Saturday's matchup at Southwestern College to open KCAC play.
A quick start for the Spires reflected how the rest of the game would go. Gustavo Freitas continued his impressive offensive play for the Spires as he opened the scoring with a goal in the eleventh minute. Eight minutes later, Paul Trejo added to the lead with a goal. Anthony Rangel, Homero Gonzalez, and William Lopez all had their presence felt with solo goals, making it 5-0. Saint Mary scored two more goals in the final ten minutes of the half, coming from Guilherme Caldas and Michael Garcia, giving them a 7-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Spires came out of halftime much like they started, with a strong defense and plenty of offense. After giving up a goal to Manhattan Christian College ten minutes into the second period, the Spires responded with a goal by Boris Trejo and a pair of goals by Jose Nava that gave the Spires a commanding 10-1 lead.
The defense held off the Thunder's attack all day, keeping them out of the offensive zone for most of the match. Saint Mary controlled the game with 33 shots to the Manhattan Christian's two. Jan Stachura and Rangel had five shots apiece, and Nava led the team with two goals on the day.
