Spires Score Late To Tie With McPherson at Home

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team hosted McPherson College for a mid-week matchup that ended in a 1-1 tie. The Spire are now 4-1-2 and 1-0-1 in conference play.

Just five minutes into Wednesday night's game, play was halted for thirty minutes due to lightning. Once the game resumed, both teams created scoring opportunities, but none got past the keepers. With twenty minutes to go in the first half, goalie Come Grieu received a red card, leaving the Spires down a man for the remainder of the night. Freshman goalkeeper Ricardo Perez replaced Grieu, and shortly after that, the Bulldogs got on the board, giving them a 1-0 lead.

The Spires, still down a man, did everything they could to hold the game at 1-0 and limited McPherson to only a few scoring opportunities. Saint Mary seemed to have caught a second wind as the game was getting closer to the ninety-minute mark. The Spires racked up four shots in the last twenty minutes of the contest, keeping the Bulldogs on their heels. With under two minutes to go, Paul Trejo found the back of the net for Saint Mary and tied the game up 1-1 with almost no time left. The Spires played hard all night and showed how resilient they are after losing their goalkeeper and playing a majority of the game down a man. Romario Harding and William Lopez lead the team with two shots on goal for the night.
