Wichita, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Football team took on the Friends Falcons Saturday night, resulting in a 38-20 defeat. The Spires are now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The first quarter started strong for Saint Mary quarterback Erick Covington hit wide receiver Jaire Stewart for a 56-yard touchdown pass. Friends answered with a touchdown of their own as the first quarter ended with both teams locked at seven. In the second, Friends extended their lead after scoring three unanswered touchdowns and went into halftime up 28-6.
The second half started well for the Spires, Landon Beecham intercepted the Falcons on the opening drive. The interception set up a 65-yard touchdown run by Raymond Webster to make the score 28-13. Saint Mary held the Falcons scoreless for most of the third quarter but with under three minutes to go, Friends scored on a 24-yard rush, taking a 35-13. The Spires had possession to open the fourth quarter and put together a 52-yard drive that ended in a nine-yard touchdown run by Caleb Bigpond. Friends kicked a field goal with five minutes left that sealed a 38-20 victory over Saint Mary. Covington had 221 total yards of offense on the night, while Hennessey Thomas led the defense with 14 tackles.
