Sterling, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played against Sterling College, resulting in a 92-78 loss. The Spires are now 10-7 overall and drop to 6-5 in conference play.
Tanea Sims and Paige Pendley got things started for the Spires in the opening minutes of the quarter with back-and-forth scoring. Halfway through the quarter, however, USM went into a scoring drought while the Warriors went on a 10-0 run to take a 22-11 lead. Alanis Delgado hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the second quarter, but the Warriors were quick to respond, going on another scoring run. With two minutes left in the quarter, Sims nailed a jump shot to cut the Sterling lead to 37-31. Free throws made by both teams made the score 40-34 heading into halftime.
Saint Mary came out ready to play after making their halftime adjustments as Jerrica Johnson and Pendley hit big shots to cut the Warrior lead to 42-39. As Sterling extended their lead with another run, Saint Mary did not give up. Daija Planas hit a jump shot to make the score 65-54 in favor of the Warriors, heading into the fourth quarter. Sterling opened the final quarter, wasting no time and extending their lead. Another three by Delgado looked to spark the Spires, but stout defensive play by the Warriors closed the game out, winning 92-78. Sims, Delgado, and Pendley combined for 53 points for the Spires.
