Spires Make Late Run But Fall to York 85-78

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team played against York University, resulting in an 85-78 loss. The Spires are now 5-14 overall and 1-12 in conference play.

After Saint Mary went down 10-6 to start the game, the Spires responded with a 6-0 run with consecutive scoring plays by Cam Southern, Deshaud St. Martin, and Joey Schultz, giving them their first lead of the game, 12-10. At the 15-minute mark, Schultz electrified the arena with a dunk to give Saint Mary some momentum. York regained the momentum and responded with a 14-4 scoring run to extend their lead to 28-20. St. Martin scored the final five points of the half for the Spires as York went into halftime leading 49-37.

The Panthers extended their lead to 15 points at the start of the second half, but Saint Mary continued to chip away. As the half continued, York looked to have the win secured as their lead grew to 17 at one point. However, with under four minutes left in the game, the Spires went on a crucial 9-0 run to cut the York lead down to 80-75. With under a minute left in the game, USM had no choice but to foul the Panthers, sending them to the free-throw line to ice the game 85-78. St. Martin led the way for Saint Mary, scoring a career-high 25 points, while Schultz had a double-double scoring 22 points with 14 rebounds.
