Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team hosted McPherson College Thursday, winning by a score of 80-67. The Spires and now 6-15 overall and 2-13 in the KCAC.
Deshaud St. Martin opened the scoring for the Spires, hitting a three-pointer in the opening minute. A short scoring run that featured a three from Joey Schultz and a layup from Jayson Luse gave Saint Mary a 16-13 lead. The Spires finished the half with a 10-2 that ended with a three from Luke Mackey. This run gave Saint Mary a comfortable eight-point lead heading into halftime.
The Spires kept up the offensive pressure to open the second half, and a layup from Cam Southern gave Saint Mary a 44-37 lead. Quentin Williams and Braylen Duncan made crucial threes throughout the middle part of the second half to protect the Spire's 11-point lead. With under five minutes to go, Saint Mary went on one final scoring run to keep the Bulldogs from mounting a comeback. Multiple free throws from Southern and Williams closed things out and gave the Spires an 80-67 win. Williams led the team in scoring with 17 points, and St. Martin was close behind, scoring 15 points along with 14 assists.
