Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Wednesday, resulting in a 74-65 win. The Spires are now 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the KCAC.
Alanis Delgado got things started for the Spires as an early three-pointer put the pressure on the Eagles. Saint Mary continued their early offensive production as Shelby Salter, and Rebecca Gilpin made layups to put the Spires up 16-3. A run by the Eagles cut that lead to 18-7 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter showed promise for Oklahoma Wesleyan as they clawed their way back to make it 24-19. The Spires regrouped after a timeout and hit back-to-back threes, helping USM claim a 34-23 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter featured back-and-forth action from both teams as OKWU again cut the Spire lead to five, making the score 45-40. Saint Mary again responded with more threes from Delgado and Jerrica Johnson. As the Spires jumped to a 52-42 lead, the Eagles looked to capitalize with a run of their own. However, the USM defense held as they took a 57-44 lead heading into the final quarter. One last push by the Eagles cut the lead to 65-59, but free throws and defense helped Saint Mary finish with a 74-65 win.
