Baartmann's Game Winner Pushes Spires Past Swedes

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team hosted Bethany College on Saturday, resulting in a 3-1 win. The Spires are now 4-5-4 and 3-3-2 in KCAC play.

Bethany struck first almost immediately with a goal on a free kick one minute into the game. Saint Mary responded with multiple shots on goal. Guilherme Caldas and Marco Vernazza nearly tied the game up, but the Swede's goalie kept it a 1-0 game. At the thirty-minute mark, Hamdan Altuma evened the score at one with his second goal of the year. At the end of the half, the Spires rattled off three shots in three minutes, but none found the back of the net, and the game remained tied heading into the break.

Both teams had many chances in the second half, but strong play from Alec Scharff helped keep it a 1-1 game. The Spires finally broke through with 15 minutes to go after Oscar Sandoval found Jade Baartmann on a corner kick to give Saint Mary a 2-1 lead. With under a minute left in the game, Anthony Rangel scored after a pass from Caldas to put away the Swedes. Romario Harding and Caldas helped keep the pressure on Nethany's goalie with a combined six shots on goal.
