Lawrence, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team played Navajo Tech University for a non-conference matchup on Sunday, resulting in a 72-61 win. The Spires are now 5-3 overall on the season.
Navajo Tech got their offensive game going first by extending their lead by three. Saint Mary then answered back with a layup by Deshaud St. Martin. Throughout the first half, the game went back and forth between both teams. It came down to the last three minutes of the half. The Spires extended their lead by eight going into the break after back-to-back layups from Tysen Brennan and a three from Demarius Houston.
The Sky Hawks started the second half by cutting into the growing Saint Mary lead. They went on a 4-0 run and came within four points of the Spires. A three from Brennan helped USM extend their lead to nine, with the score at 49-40. Navajo Tech tried to come back by again, going on a run to come within seven points. The Spires' free throw efforts helped keep the lead throughout the game and down the stretch to win 72-61.
Houston, St. Martin, and Bryce Johnson ended the game with a total of 55 points. Blake Chadwick led the team defensively with five assists and four steals.
