Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Soccer team hosted the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes for round one of the KCAC Championship Tournament, resulting in a 1-0 loss.
The Spires came out of the gate with a pressing offense, taking multiple shots on the Kansas Wesleyan net. Marisol Vargas did her part to keep the game deadlocked at zero, stringing together great saves. Erin Walden nearly gave the Spires a lead heading into halftime, but her shot sailed high of the net.
The game continued to be a back-and-forth struggle, with both teams creating chances to breakthrough but needing help to get the decisive first goal. Kansas Wesleyan struck first in the 84th minute to go up 1-0. Saint Mary continued to press on the final five minutes. Katy St. Martin almost sent the Spires into overtime, but her shots hit the crossbar, making the final score 1-0 Coyotes.
The Spires finished the year with an overall record of 8-5-5 and a KCAC record of 8-1-4, the highest conference-winning percentage in school history.
