Kansas City, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Wrestling team competed in the Avila Duals on Friday. The Spires fell in their first dual to Grand View 34-20 but rallied to beat Indian Hills and Quincy duals to finish with a 2-1 record on the day.
Saint Mary Vs Grand View
The Spires took an early lead after winning back-to-back matches in the 101 and 109 weight classes. Natalia Caldwell won in the 101 class due to Grand View leaving the class vacant. Alexsys Jacquez won her match in a 17-9 decision. The Vikings then put together four consecutive wins to make the team score 23-9 in favor of Grand View. Allison King stopped the bleeding for Siant Mary, getting a win by fall in the 143 weight class. In the 191 class, Lessly Sandoval also won her match by fall to make the final score 34-20.
Saint Mary Vs Indian Hills
After a loss in the 101 weight class, Jacquez got the Spires on the board against the Warriors, winning her second match of the day due to a vacant weight class. Saint Mary left the 116 and 123 weight classes vacant, giving Indian Hills an 18-6 lead. However, the Spires rattled off three straight wins to regain the momentum. King and Alisha Van Scoy won their matches by tech fall, while Daisy Schultz won her match by fall. Two late wins from Sandoval and Amelia Frounfelter gave Saint Mary a comfortable 35-25 win.
Saint Mary Vs Qunicy
The Spires once again took an early lead after the pair of Caldwell and Jacquez secured wins in their respective weight classes. Van Scoy got her second win of the day after beating her opponent by a 4-1 decision. In the 143 class, Ariana Mercado beat her opponent by tech fall to give the SPires a 20-19 lead in the dual. Frounfelter and Sandoval wrapped things up in the 170 and 191 weight classes, securing 12 essential points to get the 32-15 win.
