Spires Go 2-1 at Avila Duals

Kansas City, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary men's Wrestling team competed in the Avila Duals on Saturday. The Spires finished the day with a record of 2-1, beating Waldorf and William Pen but losing to Central Methodist. 

 

Saint Mary Vs Central Methodist

An opening match loss by tech fall in the 125 weight class put Saint Mary down 5-0. The Spires rebounded with two wins from Freddy Barajas (133) and Hunter White (149), both by fall, along with Ethan Woods (141) winning by decision 7-5. This gave Saint Mary a 15-5 lead over the Eagles with six matches left. Central Methodist quickly swung momentum back into their favor with four consecutive wins, taking a 23-15 lead. Ryker Blackburn (197) beat his opponent by fall for the last win of the dual for Saint Mary. A loss in the 285 weight class made the final score 28-21 Central Methodist. 

 

Saint Mary Vs Waldorf

The Spires nearly shut out the Warriors, winning the first eight matches of the dual. Roman De la Cruz (133), Josey Jernegan (157), Taner Van Scoy (174), and Ben Vogt (184) all won their matches by fall. Hartwell Taylor (141) won his match by tech fall, while Braden Headington (165) won by major decision. Saint Mary lost in the 197 and 285 weight classes to finish the dual with a 45-11 win over Waldorf. 

 

Saint Mary Vs Willaim Penn

Zayne Lewis (125) got the Spires going in their final dual of the day, beating his opponent by fall. Barajas followed Lewis with a major decision win to extend the Saint Mary lead. The Spires continued their dominant wrestling with Taylor, Jerenegan, and Austin Almaguer (149), making it five straight wins to start the dual. Saint Mary took losses in the 165, 174, and 184 weight classes, making the score 23-16 in favor of the Spires. Balckburn put the dual out of reach for William Penn after beating his opponent by fall in the 197 weight class. Saint Mary went on to win the dual 29-22.

The Spires will host Bethany College at 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, at Ryan Sports Center.
