Three Spires Make it to Championship Rounds at Doane Open

Kearney, Neb.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Wrestling team traveled to compete in the Oppenheim Open hosted by Doane University. Brody Gee (125), Freddy Barajas (133), and Ryker Blackburn (197) were the only Spires to make it to the championship rounds on the weekend.

 

Gee won his first match of the day by tech fall but was sent to the consolation bracket after a loss. Gee ran the table and made his way to the third-place match, where he lost in a close 10-8 decision. Barajas went 3-0 on his way to the championship round, winning once by decision (8-6) and twice by pin. Barajas could not win in the final match, taking second place overall. Roman De La Cruz had a similar path as Gee, winning his first match of the day but being sent to the consolation bracket in his second match. Their De La Cruz went 1-1 and managed a top-twenty finish. 

 

Hartwell Taylor went 2-2 on the day, winning his first match by fall with under a minute to go in the third period. After a loss, Taylor bounced back with a 4-1 win by decision in the consolation bracket. However, Taylor lost in the following round, ending his day. Blackburn Started the day on fire, winning his first three matches all by pin. A loss in the semifinal round sent Blackburn to the consolation bracket, where he won his next two matches again by pin for a third-place finish and weekend record of 5-1.

The Spires will take on Avila Univerisity at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Kansas City.
